GWC REQUIREMENTS

A National Senior Certificate or equivalent thereof (with a matriculation exemption), with a minimum of 60% in English language and coupled with an achievement rating of 4 or better in four subjects from the designated subjects list. (Per Government Gazette No. 751, 11 July 2008).

Students from outside of South Africa, who have English as a second language, may be required to complete a TOEFL test (or similar) to prove proficiency in English at a level suitable for academic study (see explanation at the very bottom of this page).

Foreign students who have English as a second language may be required to complete a TOEFL  Test (or similar) to prove proficiency in English at a level suitable for academic study.

English language requirement: You must have an English Language qualification to be accepted onto a course at the University. The minimum acceptable English Language requirement for undergraduate courses is IELTS – 6.0 overall and 5.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 213 in the computerised TOEFL test, 550 in the written TOEFL test, or 79 – 80 in the internet based TOEFL test.

For postgraduate courses you must have IELTS – 6.5 overall and 6.0 for the written element. This is equivalent to 232 in the computerised TOEFL test, 575 in the written TOEFL test or 90 – 91 in the internet based TOEFL test. Equivalent English language qualifications may be accepted.
